How to Get Defaulted Student Loans Off a Credit Report Before Seven Years

Negative information the credit bureaus have on file for you often remains there for up to seven years. Default on a student loan, however, and the seven-year reporting period doesn't protect you. A defaulted student loan will haunt your credit record indefinitely. If you have a federal student loan, you can have the loan's defaulted status deleted from your credit history in 10 months through the U.S. Department of Education's loan rehabilitation program.

Instructions

    1

Compile a list of your financial obligations, such as your rent, car payment and utilities, and compare this list to your monthly income. Determine how much you can afford to put toward your defaulted student loan each month.

    2

Contact the U.S. Department of Education at 1-800-621-3115. Explain that you have a defaulted student loan. Ask to speak to a representative about the loan rehabilitation program.

    3

Discuss your financial situation with the representative, who will work to negotiate a reasonable monthly payment for your defaulted loan.

    4

Send the agreed-upon payment to the lender each month. Your payment must arrive within 20 days of the due date. The U.S. Department of Education will revoke your student loan's default status after you submit nine payments on time.
