How to Correct Your Credit Report With TransUnion

It is up to the consumer to be sure that his credit report contains accurate information. TransUnion is one of the three major credit reporting agencies in the United States, and it has procedures in place to help you dispute any items on your credit report that you feel are incorrect. You can dispute anything from your personal information to your individual credit report. The process of filing a dispute is simple.

Instructions

Procedure

    1

Get a free copy of your credit report from TransUnion and analyze it carefully for any errors. According to the Federal Trade Commission, you are allowed one free credit report from TransUnion each calendar year. As a suggestion, you may want to print out your credit report and analyze it on paper where you can make notes as you go through it. You can order your report from TransUnion online or call (800) 888-4213.

    2

Follow the steps to dispute an entry found on your TransUnion credit report after you have documented all of the errors on your report printout. If you do not understand how to file a report, then check with the TransUnion FAQ online or call (800) 916-8800 to dispute an entry over the phone.

    3

Make a detailed record of your disputes including the names of any TransUnion representatives you spoke with, the date and time you called TransUnion, a printout of the online form you submitted if you used the Internet to make your dispute and any correspondence you receive from TransUnion in response to your disputes. Keep these items together in an expandable file folder.

    4

Check your credit report 30 days after submitting your disputes to make sure the changes have been made. TransUnion offers the option of joining its service on a 30-day trial basis. You can use this trial account to check your report for changes and then cancel before your 30-day trial is up.

    5

Resubmit a dispute if any errors were not corrected.
