How to Check My Credit for Free Online

Credit can affect your ability to secure employment, loans and insurance. Inaccurate or fraudulent information on your credit report could have an adverse affect on your credit standing. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), consumers are entitled to order a free credit report once annually. Annual Credit Report, which is run by the three major credit reporting bureaus (TransUnion, Experian and Equifax) offer free credit reports online.

Instructions

    1

Visit Annual Credit Report's website. According to the Federal Trade Commission, Annual Credit Report is the only authorized source for obtaining a free credit report online (which is your right by law).

    2

Keep your personal information close. For example, to verify your identity, you might be asked the exact amount of your car payment (right down to the penny). You may also be asked to confirm the lender for debt obligations such as credit cards, mortgages and other loans.

    3

Complete the questionnaire. Annual Credit Report requires that consumers verify their identity. You will be asked several questions, which are multiple choice. After answering the verification questions, you can review and print your credit report instantly.

    4

Review your credit report. Look for inaccuracies, such as accounts you don't own or inaccurate late payments. Circle inaccuracies and follow up with the reporting bureau. All three credit bureaus (TransUnion, Experian and TransUnion) have dispute forms located on their websites.

    5

Print the credit report for your records. Keep the report in a safe place (such as a locked cabinet). After ordering a credit report online, you won't be able to access it again (for free) for another 12 months.
