It's been years since you canceled your Wachovia account, but you just received a letter informing you of an old debt. Regardless of the amount you owe, having a debt with the bank can negatively affect your credit rating. Your credit score affects the interest rate you get on loans and even influences whether or not you are hired for certain jobs, so it is essential to take care of your old Wachovia debt as soon as possible.

Call the Wachovia Collection Department. The department can be reached Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. EST at 800-945-7745. Listen to the automated recording. Select the existing customer option by pressing "1," and then press the star key. You will be given the option of entering your account number or social security number. If you do not have your account number and feel uncomfortable entering your social security number, hit "0" to be transferred to a representative.
2Verify your information with the collection representative. Ask the associate if your account is still with Wachovia or if it has been transferred to a third-party collection agency. If you are informed that your account is no longer with Wachovia, write down all the relevant information to contact the collection agency.
3Pay the debt. If your debt has not been assigned to a collection agency, pay over the phone with the Wachovia representative. According to a Wachovia employee, you can't mail your payment or take it into your local Wachovia. Sometimes you will be given the option to settle the debt as opposed to paying it in full. In addition, the collection agency may be willing to let you make payments to satisfy your agreement. According to Credit.com, always request that the collection agency send you the terms of your settlement in writing before you make a payment.
