How to Pay Off Your Medical Bills

How to Pay Off Your Medical Bills

Medical bills can be a big part of your debt, causing negative credit. If you don't have insurance the medical bills can be extremely overwhelming. Being sick compounded with outstanding bills is an enormous burden, but if you act quickly instead of ignoring those bills you may be able to reduce your debt.

Instructions

    1

Dispute the bill if you believe there is a mistake. After carefully reviewing your bill, call the hospital billing department and explain that you were charged for an incorrect procedure, if that is your case. Getting mistakes removed from your bill is especially important before the bill goes on to the collections department.

    2

Work out a payment plan with the doctor or hospital. Health care providers may be willing to accept small monthly payments instead of the full bill at once. Determine how much you can manage to pay each month; the payment plan must be reasonable for both you and the health care provider. Keep up with your payments and don't miss a month.

    3

Seek help if you need it. Some nonprofits or charities provide assistance to those who have trouble paying their bills. Depending on your state, you may apply for Medicaid assistance to help you pay off the rest of your medical bills.

    4

Keep in touch with the billing department or creditor when your circumstances change so that you can make timely payments, increase or reduce your payments.
