How to Mail a Check to the Bank

How to Mail a Check to the Bank

Mailing a check to the bank for a deposit or payment is simple and straightforward. Despite the popularity of electronic banking, some people receive paper checks for personal or business reasons. Some may prefer sending checks to the bank by mail when they cannot submit them through an automated teller machine or inside the bank. Sending a check by mail usually works fine, especially when the customer has time to wait a few days until the bank records the deposit or payment after receiving the check.

Instructions

    1

Read your billing statement from the bank, or a checking or savings account statement for the proper address for banking by mail. Some banks may have a special post office box set up for receiving checks by mail. Send to that address for faster service. Contact your bank by calling its customer service number if you don't have a statement with the address. Get the customer service number from a bank credit card or debit card, or check a recent receipt from the bank.

    2

Write a note to include with the check outlining instructions for depositing the check or applying it as a payment to a credit card or loan account. You also can use a deposit slip or payment coupon that you already have. In the note, include your name, full address and telephone number. Instruct the bank to deposit the check into a specific deposit account or apply the check to a specific loan account. Include the proper account number. Call the bank, if necessary, to obtain the proper account number. Answer security questions from the bank representative to get the account number if necessary

    3

Write the account number on the memo line of the check if you are making a payment. Endorse a check for deposit by writing "for deposit only" on the back of the check, and list the account number. Make copies of the check and note. Address the envelope, and insert the check and note, or payment coupon or deposit slip.

    4

Mail the check after applying the correct postage.
