How to Get Child Support to Remove Late Payments From the Credit Bureau

How to Get Child Support to Remove Late Payments From the Credit Bureau

Overdue child support can negatively impact your credit score. Banks and other creditors may limit or refuse you credit. And, according to USA Today, prospective employers are denying employment to those with child support arrears. Parents are given notice and a chance to contest the information before it is reported. If the accounts remain delinquent, they are reported to the credit bureau. Child support agencies send monthly lists of parents who are more than $1,000 behind in child support payments. Also, balances that are unpaid for at least 180 days will appear as accounts in collection on a credit report. Fortunately, there are several ways to remove late payments from the credit bureau.

Instructions

    1

Request a copy of your credit report. Once per year you can access a report from all three of the credit bureaus for free. Check your records to make sure all reported information is correct. The credit report will give you the current information regarding how much child support you owe and which agency is reporting the information.

    2

Pay your overdue child support. When you pay off your back child support, your account will be reported to the credit bureaus as current and show a $0 balance. If you pay the account in full and have no further support obligation, then the record will be completely deleted from your credit report.

    3

File a dispute with the credit bureau if the reported child support delinquency is incorrect. You can file disputes online at the credit bureau's website. The dispute form will have you list the item you are disputing as well as the reason for the dispute.

    4

Contact the county or state agency handling your support case. All states have bureaus of child support enforcement. If the delinquency is not correct, the agency will need to correct its records.
