How to Write a Letter to Cancel an Account

How to Write a Letter to Cancel an Account

Whether it's a bank account, credit card or gym membership, there are times when you need to cancel an account. You can always call, but you will have no proof you actually closed the account. That could leave you open to additional monthly charges or fees. Sending the notice by postal mail creates a paper trail so that if there are ever any questions about when or why you closed the account, you can refer to your letter for proof.

Instructions

    1

Place the company's name and address and the account number for the account you wish to cancel at the top of the letter.

    2

Start the first paragraph by firmly stating that you wish to cancel your account, effectively immediately.

    3

Instruct the company to immediately close the account to any further charges and to send you a final bill for the entire remaining balance, if any. Emphasize that no additional activity should appear on the account.

    4

Request that any updates to your credit report about the canceled account indicate that the account was closed at your request.

    5

Pay any balance due on the account after receiving the final statement.
