How to Choose Hospital Bill Review Companies

How to Choose Hospital Bill Review Companies

Medical bills cause half of all bankruptcies in the United States, according to a recent report by the Associated Press. Many people find themselves sick or injured with insufficient or no health insurance at all. When medical bills arrive in the mail, it can be overwhelming. There can be bills from the hospital, the doctor, the anesthesiologist, the lab and more. How can you be certain you actually received all of these procedures and medications? A reputable medical billing company might be the answer.

Instructions

    1

Find out what type of reviews each company provides. A good medical review company will not only audit items such as any medications, supplies or anesthesia you are being billed for. They will also check your entire hospital chart, and review codes and other data line by line looking for possible duplications, overcharges or other errors.

    2

Check with the Better Business Bureau. Find out where the company is headquartered and see whether they are registered with or have any complaints listed on the Better Business Bureau for their area (see Resources below).

    3

See what they will charge you to review your bill. Most medical review companies work on a contingency basis, meaning you don't have to pay them unless and until you receive a reduced hospital bill. Find out what they are typically able to save people and decide if it will be worth your while.

    4

Inquire as to whether the company is legally able to work in your state. Most medical review companies can review billing data for all 50 states, but that is not always the case. You should also ask how much your bill needs to be in order to be reviewed. For instance, some companies will not take bills that are under $500.

    5

Learn about programs the company has available. For example, if you or a family member are suffering from a chronic illness or receiving ongoing treatment, you should seek out a company that offers an annual plan. They will review all of your bills during the year for a one-time or monthly rate.
