How to Correct Credit Reports

Finding errors on your credit report can be quite frustrating, especially if you do not know how to go about correcting the errors. These errors on your report can be holding you back from a loan you are trying to obtain or even maybe bringing your score below its potential. There are a few things you can do to correct these errors and get your credit back on track.

Instructions

    1

Look over your credit report to find all of the errors. Make sure you check balances as well as dates to make sure that everything else is correct and current.

    2

Compose a letter to the credit reporting agency with the discrepancy. There are three major credit reporting agencies, and the one you will want to communicate with is the one that the report came from. All you need to include in the letter would be the discrepancy and include proof in your favor.

    3

Send your letter to the credit reporting agency. You may find it beneficial to send it by certified mail, so that you can be sure your letter was received. The agency is the only one that can correct credit reports, so this would be the first step in correcting it.

    4

Create a similar letter and mail it to the creditor that the debt is from. It needs to be informed that you are requesting the error to be corrected and why you think that it should be corrected.

    5

Wait some time for the error to be corrected. In most instances, you should be informed of a decision to change your credit report error within 30 days of receipt. If changed, the credit reporting agency should send along a new copy of your credit report.
