The Fair Credit Reporting Act mandates that the big three consumer reporting companies --- Experian, Equifax and TransUnion --- provide credit holders with one free copy of your credit report every 12 months. This can be done through a central website, annualcreditreport.com --- although there are many other websites, deemed "imposter" websites by the Federal Trade Commission. Creditreport.com is one such website that offers a free credit report with a seven-day trial membership. If you do not cancel within seven days, your "free" credit report converts to a $19.95 monthly service.
Instructions
- 1
Take action within seven days of signing up for the free report, if possible, to avoid paying the $19.95 monthly fee.
2Visit the website at CreditReport.com. Click "Contact Us" in the menu bar at the top of the page. Click "How do I cancel my membership?" in the "FAQ" box to read their membership benefits, in the instance you change your mind and want to keep the service. You can also read your credit report rights on this page.
3Call CreditReport.com customer service at 1-877-297-7790. Press "1" at the prompt for billing and membership questions. Have your Social Security number or membership number available. You will need this information to cancel your account. Unfortunately, if you call outside the seven-day window to cancel your free credit report, your credit card will be charged and can not be reversed.
4Tell the operator you want to cancel your membership.
5Look in the email that contains the cancellation confirmation. Keep this email in case your membership is not canceled. You can use this for proof to dispute the charge with your credit card company.
