The Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS) debt, more commonly known as the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) debt since 2005, refers to the loan that the Australian government provides for eligible Australian students enrolled in Commonwealth-supported places. It covers all or part of the fees for students in higher education. The Australian Tax Office (ATO) is responsible for managing HELP debt and it can provide information on the amount of debt you owe.
Instructions
- 1
Call the ATO at 13 28 61.
2Provide your personal details to confirm your identity when asked. You will need to tell the operator either your name or your Australian business number. You also have to provide any three of the authorized personal identifiers, which include tax file number, date of birth, address, bank account details and details contained in an ATO notice.
3Request information on your HELP debt. You can ask for the balance of your account and/or order a HELP information statement to be sent to you.
