Tools to Protect Identity

Tools to Protect Identity

Identity theft is a growing crime and it can happen to anyone. Though there is no 100 percent guarantee you will not become a victim of identity theft, there are tools out there for you as a consumer to use that can limit your risk. Some of these tools are free while others require subscription fees.

Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware Software

One of the ways identity thieves get your personal information is through the Internet and your computer. Viruses, Trojan horses and spyware can open up your computer to identity thieves looking to get your Social Security number, passwords, log-in information and even banking information. Anti-virus and anti-spyware software can limit your exposure to these identity threats and prevent your information from being obtained by computer hackers. There are some forms of anti-virus and anti-spyware software you can get for free through your Internet service provider or online, but most will require a monthly subscription or one-time purchase.

Shredder

Dumpster diving and digging through consumers' trash is still a popular way for identity thieves to get information they need. Your Social Security number, address, full name and even date of birth can all be found on documents you throw away. A shredder can help limit the amount of information these thieves can find. Shred all personal documents before disposing of them in the trash. Personal documents include papers that contain your name, address, phone number, Social Security number, banking information, credit card numbers or date of birth.

Safe or Lockbox

What you have in your home can often be more than enough for an individual to steal your identity. Rather than leaving important documents out in the open, a safe or lockbox can protect these documents in the invent your home is burglarized. Documents that contain your Social Security number, passport information, medical information and banking accounts should be kept in a safe or lockbox to keep them out of the reach of burglars and potential identity thieves.

Credit Monitoring Services

The most common way a consumer finds out her identity was stolen is by checking her credit report. Often by the time it has been discovered the damage has already been done. Credit monitoring services can be an effective tool in protecting a consumer's identity by frequently monitoring all three credit reports for any new accounts, changes to current accounts, credit authorization and inquiries as well as address or name changes. Consumers are then notified immediately of changes or suspicious activity on these accounts to verify whether they are victims of identity theft. These services do typically cost a monthly service fee to use, but can be effective in protecting your identity.
