All American consumers have a credit history. A report of this history details the financial behavior of each consumer, containing your payment history on all accounts (mortgages, auto loans, credit cards, student loans and charge cards) and public records like judgments and liens. One free copy of your credit report each year from the credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax and TransUnion) is mandated by the federal government.
Instructions
- 1
Collect all of your monthly expense statements. This includes your checking and savings account statements. You may need all of this information to answer specific security questions about your credit history.
2Log on to AnnualCreditReport.com. This is the federally-mandated website for American consumers maintained by the three bureaus. All consumers can use this site to get free credit reports. Do not use any other site claiming free reports--Annual Credit Report is the only legitimate website.
3Enter your name, address, Social Security number and date of birth. This will bring you to the verification page. On this screen you'll be presented with several questions about your credit report.
4Answer all the questions. You must answer them correctly. Use your paperwork if you cannot find an answer. These questions will deal with the names of your creditors, balances, recent payments, when you opened accounts and how long you've had certain accounts. Double-check these answers before continuing.
5Select Equifax as the credit bureau on the next screen. This will take you to your free report on the Equifax company website. Print the report for your records.
