How to Change your Social Security Number & Get a New Credit File LEGALLY!

In our current economy, a new social security number is always beneficial for many reasons. The Social Security Administration permits you to request a change of your social security number for two reasons: (1) Victim of Identity Theft or (2) Victim of Domestic Violence. I will should you process and documentation needed to request a new social security for the latter.

Instructions

    1

You can request a new social security number if you have been victim of domestic violence and your personal safety is currently threaten. This applies to both men and women. There are men who are victims of domestic violence also. So this document does not discriminate against gender.

    2

You still need to convince the Social Security Administration that a new number is warranted. This is where the more official documentation over the longer period is more helpful, but you have to have documentation or Social Security will deny your request.

    3

The documentation that is most preferred by the Social Security Administration are Police Reports (aka Domestic Incident Reports-DIR), Orders of Protection (both expired and non-expired), Criminal complaints (whether there was any prosecution or conviction). These documents should be against the same person.

    4

Now take your documents and proceed to your nearest Social Security Office. You may wish to schedule an appointment in advance to avoid the long wait for walk ins! You then explain your situation of domestic violence. You will complete and sign some forms, the specialist will make copies of the documents (bring the originals if all possible, if not bring what you have). You will; get the originals back. Then they will forward your request to the main processing center, and then you begin to wait.

    5

This process can take from 6 months or longer. The Social Security Office will contact you if more information is needed. If your request is granted, you will not receive any notification in the mail. Instead you will receive a new social security card, and if on Medicare you will receive a new Medicare card. If you are collecting a social security check, you check may be delayed the first month.

    6

If you do decide to request a change and your request is granted, the drawback is you will no longer be able to conduct your social security business over the phone or online. You must go into the office. The positive benefit is safety from your abuser.

    Important FAQ:

How does changing your social security number protect you from past abuse?

If you and your abuser were married or had joint credit accounts, and now are divorce, your name and address history (including future addresses) will appear on their credit report. If you move out of fear from your abuser, your new address is now on their credit report. For your abuser to find you, they just need to pull THEIR OWN credit report which is does not constitute a violation any orders of protection. You need to take precautions.
