How to Send a Dispute Letter to Creditors

Many financial advisers suggest that you review your credit report periodically. The information found in your credit report can affect whether you are approved for a loan and the amount of interest you will have to pay on that loan. For this reason, it is important that you make sure that this information is correct and up to date. If the information in a credit report is found to be inaccurate, you should notify the creditor in writing by sending a dispute letter.

Instructions

    1

Provide correct information in the dispute letter. The information provided should include your name, address, city, state, and zip code as well as the creditor's name and address.

    2

Maintain formality in your dispute letter. For example, use "Dear Sir or Madam" for the salutation and "Sincerely" as a complimentary closing.

    3

Keep your dispute letter simple. Send a separate letter for each disputed item to the creditor. Also, highlight the disputed item in the letter to prevent any confusion.

    4

Include copies of any documents that corroborate your position. The creditor will use these documents as references while reviewing information on the disputed items.
