If you have a few blemishes on your credit report and you want to fix them, there is no need to hire the services of a credit repair company. You can fix your credit report for free. It takes a little planning, diligence and step-by-step persistence, but it can be done without having to spend a dime.

    Obtain a copy of your current credit report. Visit AnnualCreditReport.com and request a free copy. They provide free copies of your credit profile from the three top credit reporting agencies, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. AnnualCreditReport.com is endorsed by the Federal Trade Commission.

    Review your credit report and highlight any negative information that is incorrect. Take your time in going over the credit report. You want to make sure that you address each and every potential problem.

    Locate any documentation to back up your claim. Whether you have hard copies of your banking or credit card statements or electronic copies, make sure you have documented proof that the credit report is incorrect.

    Contact the credit reporting agency. It's best to put everything in writing in the form of a letter to the credit reporting agencies. You can do this for free and it's the best way to ensure that everyone is on the same page. Along with your letter, include copies of documents that substantiate your claim to fix the credit report.

    Await a response and follow up. The credit reporting agencies have 30 days in which to investigate the discrepancy and get back to you with their findings. Make sure to follow up with the agencies until the problem is resolved.

By having your letter included as a part of your credit report, anyone looking at your credit report will see that you have a grievance and that you do not agree with the derogatory information in your report.
