How to Setup a Bill Payment Online

How to Setup a Bill Payment Online

Electronic banking has changed the way both consumers and businesses conduct their finances. Before e-banking, both consumers and businesses would need to physically send out bill payments to the electric company, the gas or heating company and to all creditors. However, it is now possibleand simpleto pay all bills electronically. In addition to being simple, there are a variety of options for e-paying from which to choose. The choice you make should be the easiest and most efficient for your banking habits.

Instructions

    1

Set up online banking with your current checking account if you aren't already enrolled. One of the easiest ways to pay online is through your bank's e-bill payment center. To create an online profile with your bank, you'll need your account number, Social Security number, address, telephone number and any passwords and PINs you use to access the account.

    2

Access the e-billing center on your bank's website. Make sure you are logged in under your name and the account you wish to use for payments (if you have multiple accounts). Click the button that reads "add a new payee." This will take you to a page to enter the account holder and number. The bank may instantly recognize the payee (especially if it is a large company or bank), but it could take three days to verify the payee's account information.

    3

Log on to the account holder's website if you do not want to use your bank for bill payment. For example, if you have a credit card with Chase, log on to Chase.com. You will need to create an online profile using your account number. Create a user ID and password and verify your account with your name, Social Security number and telephone number.

    4

Log on to your online profile at your account holder's website. View your account by clicking on the outstanding balance. Choose the option to "make online payment." Be warned that paying through the account holder's site may incur fees and transaction charges.

    5

Verify that your payments went through by accessing your checking or savings account either online or at a local branch. You should also receive a confirmation email with the payment amount, the date and the confirmation number.
