How to File a Fraud Alert

Identity theft is a growing problem and a valid concern for anyone trying to protect their good name and credit standing. It is important to check your credit report at least once a year to check for possible problems. If you suspect fraudulent activity or are afraid that someone has stolen information from you, such as your social security number, filing a fraud alert with the three credit bureaus will help stop identity thieves from accessing your personal information and damaging your credit.

    Visit the "Experian" website and click "Fraud Alert" under "Credit Report Assistance."

    Select "Initial Alert," which is for consumers who suspect fraud. This alert will remain on file for ninety days. Fill in the required fields and submit the online form.

    Go to the "Equifax" website. Click "Request a Fraud Alert" under "Fraud Alerts & Freeze" on the main page of the site. Complete and submit the online form to place a fraud alert.

    Go to the "TransUnion" website. Click "Prevent Identity Theft" under "Consumer Assistance" from the main page of the site. Select "Fraud Alert" from the "Related Topics" list on the left of the "Fraud and Identity Theft" page.

    Follow the instructions under "Place a Fraud Alert" to file an alert with TransUnion by phone, mail or email.
